French business schools big fish in a small pond
For the seventh time running the British daily the Financial Times has published an annual ranking list of European business schools. Four of the ten top schools are French. For the business paper Les Echos this demonstrates the high quality of French schools - albeit only by European standards: "The success of these schools in making their mark internationally is proof that, contrary to a view still too widely held, the French are not completely at odds with business or the economy! ... The real question is why the French grandes écoles in management or engineering fare so well in European rankings, but so poorly as soon as the horizon is widened. The now famous Shanghai ranking is the best example. ... The truth is also that French schools are underfinanced in comparison with their US counterparts. And in terms of the money they spend on their students they are still dwarves."
