Hunt for ex-premier hurts Croatia's EU bid
Croatia's former prime minister Ivo Sanader has fled the country to avoid arrest after the Croatian parliament lifted his immunity and an international warrant was issued for his arrest. For the daily Večer the affair creates problems for the negotiation of Croatia's EU accession: "As long as Sanader enjoyed parliamentary immunity no application could be filed for him to be taken into pre-trial custody, as he was above prosecution. The real question for Croatia remains how Brussels views the whole affair. Zagreb has evidently not yet addressed the chapter 'justice' - including the topic of corruption - in the EU rapprochement process. And after what happened yesterday it looks like it won't do so for a long time."
