Croatia's Catholic Church supports war criminal
The Croatian wartime deputy interior minister and presumed war criminal Tomislav Merčep was arrested at the beginning of December. A paramilitary unit under his command is said to have killed Serbian civilians during the Croatian War of Independence. Now the Croatian Catholic Church has sided with Merčep in a move that the daily Delo finds deeply un-Christian: "In defending Merčep, the Catholic Church in Croatia confirms that its policy runs counter to the interests of Croatians. It is against EU accession, against friendly accords with its neighbours and against cooperating with the Hague Tribunal. For the Church, the condemned and accused war criminals are still heroes. In acting in this way the leadership of the Catholic Church in Croatia doggedly affirms its anti-European stance. ... For the Croatian Church the heroes are clearly those people who disrespect at least half of the Ten Commandments."
