The end of the ice age
After decades of conflict over the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia, Bavaria and the Czech Republic have now put their political ice age behind them, writes the business paper Hospodářské noviny: "As opposed to his predecessor Edmund Stoiber, the current Bavarian premier Horst Seehofer has met the Czechs half way by not making his visit conditional on the Czech Republic's abolishing the Beneš Decrees. Both sides have understood during the thaw on the Vltava that it only makes sense to take a forward-looking approach. Czech exports to the biggest and richest German state account for 30 percent of all exports to Germany. Conversely Bavarian investments in the Czech Republic now run into the billions. But the full potential for the future is made clear by the joint declaration listing 16 concrete areas for future cooperation."
