Greek border fence in place of fair EU policy
Greece wants to stem the stream of refugees entering the EU by putting up a huge fence around its borders. That won't stop people from Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa from risking their lives to secure a livelihood for their families, writes the leftist daily die tageszeitung: "This policy is not only profoundly inhumane, it is also useless. Everyone knows that the solution to the problem lies in facilitating legal entry to Europe. Or providing opportunities for these people in their home countries. So far Europe has failed to take even the most obvious step. The EU must finally make good on its promise to create fair conditions for its African and Asian neighbours. If the unfair subsidies for European agricultural products were abolished and Europe's fishing fleets stopped plundering the African coasts a lot more people would live there. First Europe destroys the basis for these people's existence, then it wants to use police to keep them at arm's length. This policy can't work in the long term."
