Compromises as a solution

The Republican majority in the US House of Representatives is anything but compact. Compromises à la Otto von Bismarck will be necessary, the left-liberal daily La Repubblica predicts after the new US Congress's first day of work: "Yesterday was like watching the first day of secondary school, with the shining faces of the newcomers and the gloomy stares of those who flunked a year. … As has always been the case in the legislative history of any parliament, one could already hear the sound of the 'sausage machine', as Otto von Bismarck called the legislative process which is the result of compromises and sacred principles being fed through the grinder of reality. With such an assortment of election pledges and the fervent enthusiasm of new movements, disappointment and yet another about-face loom on the horizon.The conservative majority is unstable. It carries within it the seed of self-destruction."
