Prime Minister Tusk under attack
The final report on the Smolensk plane crash lays most of the blame on the inebriated commander of the Polish Air Force, but Prime Minister Donald Tusk has now come under heavy fire in his own country, the left-liberal daily Süddeutsche Zeitung points out: "Not without reason did Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk cut short his skiing holiday after receiving the report. For he is the main target of the criticism. He stands accused of not having insisted on the appointment of a Polish-Russian commission of inquiry. And then there's still a question mark over why President Lech Kaczynski didn't attend the official ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, which is why he decided to fly to this symbolic place with his own delegation three days later. Tusk now faces the serious accusation of having sidelined Kaczynski as an election tactic coordinated with Russian Premier Vladimir Putin. It looks very much like the Smolensk accident could cast a dark shadow over the Polish election year 2011."
