Turkish film mocks memory of Holocaust
On 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the anti-Israeli Turkish film Valley of the Wolves: Palestine premiered at Austrian cinemas. The left-liberal daily Der Standard is dismayed by the lack of criticism in Austria and Turkey. "The action film Valley of the Wolves: Palestine started screening in Vienna and four other Austrian cities on Thursday. Not a single cinema owner or moviegoer was discomfited by the fact that that day was International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On 27 January 1945 the survivors of the Auschwitz Birkenau extermination camp were liberated. ... Valley of the Wolves makes the murder of Israelis a matter of honour and justice. In Ankara, however, they can't understand all the fuss in Germany and Austria. It's only a film, the spokesperson for the Turkish Foreign Ministry explained. For a government that attaches so much importance to public moral this is a remarkable attitude."
