Europe alone is energy conscious
The EU states will have to double their investments in renewable energy, currently at 35 billion euro, the EU Commission announced on Monday. This puts Europe in a lonely position globally, comments the financial paper Hospodářské noviny: "Europe is running a race which no one else is running. And the victory in this race will do nothing for the global climate. Even if Europe were to sink its emissions by 20 percent, this would equate to no more than 3 percent globally. The Union should ask itself how it will benefit from its emission cuts. The only cuts worth making are in transport, lighting and heating. These do not threaten competitiveness but do save money. ... In the EU's 20-20-20 strategy, which entails cutting emissions by 20 percent, producing 20 percent of energy through renewable sources and saving energy by 20 percent, only the last point seems to make any sense."
