EU travelling circus must stop
The European Parliament resolved on Wednesday to cut costs over the next two years by holding fewer sessions in Strasbourg. About time, writes the daily Sme. "It has never been difficult for critics of the EU to point to where European taxpayers' money is being wasted. Or at least that was the case until now, in view of the travelling circus that commutes several times a year between Brussels and Strasbourg. An expensive thrill for the hundreds of MEPs and even more bureaucrats, assistants and work-shy staff who travel 400 kilometres with every move. This nonsense would have continued had it not been for the crisis. ... The wastage only served to nurture the superpower illusions of a France keen to maintain its leadership role in Europe. ... If Athens were to demand similar treatment by saying it is the cradle of European democracy it would be laughed out of the EU. But France's glory must never fade, even if it means depriving the people of their daily bread."
