Aleš Gaube sees Arab Spring as critique of the West
The Arab Spring holds unprecedented potential for a more just distribution of wealth in Tunisia, Egypt and the Gulf States, writes columnist Aleš Gaube in the left-liberal daily Dnevnik. Events in the region tie in with a critique of the West, its colonial history and its values, he concludes: "The domino effect of the Arab Spring has also reached Gulf states, and enthusiasm at the power of the masses has now overflowed into sub-Saharan Africa by means of the Internet. The West must understand that not only is the colonial legacy in the Middle East and North Africa being disassembled before its eyes, we are also seeing the most scathing critique yet expressed of the capitalist system. Never before has there been such an opportunity for establishing new democracies, a more equitable social order and the long-term redistribution of wealth. For that reason the Arab Spring carries more visionary power than the Eastern European renaissance after the end of communism in 1989."
