Inept premier drives Slovenia into crisis
Karl Erjavec, president of the Democratic Party of Pensioners (DeSUS), on Tuesday announced the withdrawal of his party from Slovenia's ruling coalition. The move was prompted by the resignation of the regional minister nominated by DeSUS after only three months in office. The left-liberal daily Dnevnik lays the blame for this government crisis squarely on the shoulders of Prime Minister Borut Pahor: "The problem is Pahor, who has neither the skill nor the political talent necessary to lead the coalition and the government. In such an important office, the lack of just one of these skills is too much. ... For that reason it is time for the governing coalition to take radical action if it still believes it worthwhile to keep going until the end of the legislature period. Not Pahor's pathological optimism but decisive action and a cabinet reshuffle can save the coalition. But this time Pahor's social democrats will have to rise to the challenge. Until now they've been silent and pulled the wool over their own eyes regarding their incompetent leader."
