Turks want to admit Armenian genocide
Hundreds of thousands of Armenians commemorated on the weekend the Turkish genocide against the Armenians which started on April 24, 1915. Meanwhile Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered the demolition of an uncompleted monument symbolising the reconciliation between Armenians and Turks that stands close to the Armenian border. The leftist daily die tageszeitung criticises Erdoğan but praises the reconciliation efforts undertaken by Turkish society: "A barbaric act that makes a mockery of all his promises to heal the wounds between Armenia and Turkey. But fortunately the reconciliation between the two neighbouring countries is not just up to the governments. Each year there are more civilian initiatives and the commemorative marches that took place not just in Istanbul but also in five other Turkish cities on Sunday make it clear that Turkish society will no longer allow itself to be forced to deny the genocide."
