Czechs between comedy and tragedy
The Czech Republic's right-wing government survived a vote of no confidence initiated by the opposition Social Democrats on Tuesday after several ministers who in the meantime have resigned were accused of bribery. Although the outcome was clear from the start it was right to take this step, writes the liberal daily Pražský deník: "It was clear that there wouldn't be a majority against the government. The only question was whether the parliamentary debate was a meaningful or a pointless spectacle. It was actually meaningful. With their behaviour last week the ruling parties practically forced the opposition into a vote of no confidence. ... The debate has provided the opportunity for citizens to survey the Czech political landscape in all its wretchedness, both comic and tragic. And such an opportunity is never superfluous."
