Adulterated beer leaves drinkers high and dry
A Czech court has been charged since Wednesday with deciding whether the renowned brewery in Plzeň has started brewing its premium lager Pilsner Urquell with cheaper ingredients. The case was brought before the court by the Association for the Honour of Premium Beer, which claims to have detected a decline in the beer's quality. For the conservative daily Lidové noviny this curious case is no laughing matter: "The case draws attention to the problem of producers that use substitute ingredients in their food products. As long as their use remains within the legal framework, there's nothing to be said against it. ... What the Pilsner brewery thinks is up to them. But it is up to us whether we buy their product or ignore it altogether. Nevertheless all such so-called premium brands could sooner or later be replaced by even cheaper producers, from China for example. And that would serve them right."
