Gyurcsány gravedigger of Hungary's Socialists
There are indications reports that Hungary's ex-prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsány and his team plan to leave the opposition Socialist Party (MSZP) and found a new centre-left party called the Democratic Party. The pro-government conservative daily Magyar Nemzet already sees Gyurcsány bringing about the downfall of the MSZP: "MSZP boss Attila Mesterházy may have the support of the old elites but he is also just as clumsy and lacking in ideas as they are. ... Gyurcsány certainly envisages the left-liberal 'democratic' future without the current leadership and the MSZP name. This is a clear declaration of war. There may be a temporary, sham compromise, but never lasting peace between the restless Gyurcsány and the party leadership around Mesterházy. It's difficult to imagine that this power struggle will end with victory for one side. ... But Gyurcsány seems to still have the power to dig the MSZP's grave."
