Mass murder not barred by limitation
The verdict pronounced against the former guard at the Nazi extermination camp of Sobibór by the Munich district court sends the right message, in the eyes of the left-liberal daily Der Standard: "The German judiciary has not allowed itself to be misled (as it was with many trials in the 1950s and 1960s) and has sent the right message: firstly, the mass murder of Jews does not fall under the statute of limitations and can be prosecuted even more than 60 years after the crime. The court didn't just dismiss the matter saying: it was so long ago and Demjanjuk is so old and feeble now. Secondly, they are taking action to punish even the relatively small fry; not just those who gave the orders from above must reckon with being brought to justice. All those who helped were guilty. ... The Demjanjuk verdict creates a bit of law and order."
