Belgium's boring crisis

Coalition negotiations have once more come to a standstill in Belgium, almost a year after the elections, and mediator Wouter Beke has resigned his mandate. All the tactical manoeuvring of the country's politicians is to blame, the daily De Morgen writes: "What have the politicians and parties represented in parliament done with their mandates? Do they still dare to look their voters in the eye? Do they dare to honestly say that they are behaving earnestly and responsibly? There's no shame in a politician paying attention to party interests and upcoming elections. But it is inadmissible for these interests to continually stand above those of the country, a better organisation of the state and the well-being and prosperity of eleven million citizens. ... The country is slowly but surely becoming apolitical. A political crisis that no longer moves people, but bores them to tears."
