Shale gas make Poland independent
Poland will stick to its plans for mining natural gas from shale in a bid to reduce its energy dependency on Russia, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Friday in response to France's withdrawal from the shale mining project. The left-liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza supports Tusk: "If the assumptions are confirmed that Poland has considerable reserves of this type of natural gas then this will change not only our energy industry but also the economic balance in Europe. ... The mining of this gas from shale has grown so rapidly in the US that the country overtook Russia as the greatest gas producer worldwide in 2009. ... This success of the US has naturally caught the attention of Poland, which according to experts has the largest reserves of shale gas in Europe."
