Politicians scaring away Bulgarians
The number of Bulgarians who have turned their backs on their country for good has tripled since 2007, according to a new study by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Who will assume responsibility for this trend, the online portal Svobodata asks: "Whereas in 2007 most immigrants cited better job prospects or simply higher living standards as their main reason for leaving, nowadays they don't go just to make more money. 200,000 people, around half of those questioned, said that they simply no longer want to live in Bulgaria. They don't want smarter cars or a fuller refrigerator. They just want to get away from here. Bulgaria traumatises them and they are ashamed to belong to this country. ... But where did things go wrong? And who will assume responsibility for the fact that Bulgaria has turned into a step-mother who frightens away her children? ... [President] Paranov, [opposition leader] Stanischev, [Prime Minister] Borisov? ... And how, when they're the very reason why so many Bulgarians are leaving?"
