Lithuania's rail policy un-European

For several years there have been no direct train connections between the capital cities of the three Baltic states, and a new train between Riga and Minsk now won't be travelling via Vilnius after all but bypassing Lithuania entirely. The Latvian newspaper Neatkarīgās Rīta Avīze sees this as a consequence of the Lithuanian protectionism and a violation of EU principles: "Lithuania's railway policy makes a mockery of the European idea and all those who believe that the goal of the EU is further integration. By now it's clear that in the EU it's those who couldn't care less about the European ideas and principles who benefit most and set up artificial barriers like little Berlin Walls within the Union. Within these enclosures they regulate the transport routes across their territories so they can monopolise their own geographic positions. If Baltic unity is just an empty phrase then the Latvian government should not hesitate to finally put an end to this fairytale."
