EU must back Romania's judicial reform
Adrian Severin, the Romanian European parliamentarian who has been implicated in a lobbying scandal, appeared before the EU Parliament's legal affairs committee on Monday. The anti-corruption authority DNA is calling for his immunity to be revoked. The EU should comply, writes the daily România Liberă: "The European Commission has always been extremely appreciative of the DNA's unbiased investigations in cases of corruption. ... The European Commission has often shown concern about the parliament's attempts to weaken anti-corruption legislation, because the Romanian parliament is not always entirely honest when the battle against corruption turns against one of its own representatives. External pressure from the EU is therefore very important. If the EU Parliament rejects the DNA's demand and doesn't lift Adrian Severin's immunity it will send an extremely negative signal that would undermine the message of the EU and civil society in Romania demanding judicial reform in the country."
