Romania plays up to Serbia

Along with Serbia, Romania also boycotted the summit meeting between US President Barack Obama and Central and Southern European leaders on Friday and Saturday in Warsaw. By boycotting the summit Bucharest protested against Kosovo's participation as an independent state. The daily Adevărul criticises Romania's absence: "We missed it all. The discussion on the missile defence shield, energy security and the Arab revolution. Other more pragmatic heads of government used the summit to further their own discussions. Bulgaria, for example, lobbied for Schengen accession. ... With its boycott Romania wanted to support its neighbour Serbia. But despite all the favours it does Serbia it has not been able to do a thing to improve the lives of the Romanian minority in this neighbouring country where tens of thousands are still denied the most basic rights. ... And that in a state that wants to join the EU."
