E. coli hysteria annoys Romania

There has not been a single case of suspected E. coli in Romania so far yet the Romanian farmers are facing daily losses of at least 100,000 euros because of the current E. coli epidemic. The Romanian Ministry of Agriculture blames the German and Czech import bans on cucumbers for the situation. The daily Adevărul can't understand what all the panic there is about: "The E. coli bacteria causes epidemics almost everywhere in the world each year. In 1996, 10,000 people in Japan fell ill with it. In 2006, the bacteria triggered an epidemic in California. Back then spinach was first suspected until it became clear that water contaminated with the faeces of ruminants and dirt was the cause. The farmers were never compensated for the millions they lost. The whole world can remember how these epidemics begin but can anyone remember how they end? At some point the media and the world lose interest. ... Now the whole show is repeating itself and the losses increase every time it happens."
