Slovenes against sustainable policy
The Slovenes have rejected a raise in the retirement age in a referendum. The left-liberal daily Népszabadság sees the government's proposed policy as far-sighted: "Prime Minister Borut Pahor has indicated that he would resign in the case of a No in the referendum. The centre-right opposition is now demanding exactly that. The Slovenian budget deficit is quite high, it's true, but at 40 percent national debt is relatively low compared with the rest of the EU. So what's the problem? Slovenia's politicians have been trying to think in sustainable terms. They want to make the Slovenian economy more flexible on the one hand, and to increase Slovenia's competitiveness by raising the retirement age on the other. But the people took a different view."
