Lluís Bassets on the upcoming third Intifada
The tensions between Israel and Palestine will soon reach a new climax, fears Lluís Bassets in the left-liberal daily El País: "Just three months to go before these two trains collide. It will happen in September, after the UN General Assembly at which Palestine leader Mahmud Abbas can rely on at least 100, and perhaps between 130 or 140 member states recognising Palestine as a member. ... If nothing happens by then and initiatives like that by France for an emergency conference this July fail, the tension may culminate in a new Intifada in September. If the first Intifada in 1987 was associated with stones and the second in 2000 was characterised by suicide bombings, this third Intifada now in preparation will be peaceful. It will follow the example set by the young Tunisians and Egyptians who rebelled against dictators and take inspiration, like the revolutionaries at Tahrir Square, from thinkers like the American Gene Sharp who advocate a peaceful fight not just for moral reasons but also for reasons of political efficacy and public persuasion."
