Czech trade unions no opponent
Czech bus and train drivers staged a nationwide strike on Thursday to protest what they see as the unsocial reforms of the liberal-conservative government. But the strike failed to cause chaos because the Czechs are doing just fine, writes the liberal Slovak daily Sme: "The day when the Czech Republic was supposed to be rocked in its foundations didn't live up to expectations. The 'passionate blockades' the transport trade unions had promised failed to materialise. There could be no talk of a rebellion of the Czech labour force. ... There simply aren't the preconditions for social revolt in the Czech Republic, because everyone here makes a more or less good living. What there is is dissatisfaction with the political situation. ... But the government has a more serious opponent than the trade union headquarters - namely itself and its own internal feuding."
