Latvians hesitate to introduce euro
The Greek crisis has revived the debate about the right timing for Latvia's conversion to the euro. The national-conservative daily Neatkarīgā rīta avīze urges caution: "The structure of the Eurozone has a visible defect, and the current system is unfair because it creates conditions which prevent balanced development within Europe and can lead to the insolvency of EU member states. The Eurozone must therefore undergo change. It must be rebuilt on a stable foundation and should not accept members who are not in a position to compete economically with Germany. But even if the principles of the Eurozone are changed Latvia shouldn't comply with them at any cost because they could be changed again in a couple of years' time. This is the main reason why even the most enthusiastic advocates of introducing the euro in Latvia in 2014 are already talking of postponing the move."
