More responsibility for Europe
In view of the US plans to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, Clemens Wergin calls on Europe to shoulder more responsibility in his blog in the conservative daily Die Welt: "America's power and global influence rest largely on its military capabilities for securing sea routes, protecting allies and maintaining regional balances. ... Europe, by contrast, is developing an ever more bloated redistribution system while increasingly cutting its military expenditures, confident that American security policy will do the trouble-shooting. ... A world whose order is no longer overseen by America will be less peaceful. And it would be one in which Europe either defends its interests at far greater expense or is condemned to global insignificance. ... For that reason it is in Europe's greatest interest to take over responsibility from America."
