Boxing victory for stricken Romanians

The Romanian world boxing champion Lucian Bute successfully defended his super middleweight title again on Saturday night. For the first time in his professional career he was able to fight in front of a Romanian audience. His victory in Bucharest was balm for the wounded Romanian soul, proclaims the liberal-conservative daily Adevărul: "The Romanians are constantly being told that they are thieving, lazy and needy. From the politicians they hear nothing but bad news. The same goes for economists, sociologists, psychologists and the all other grumblers who occupy the TV studios. The country as a whole has landed in the ditch and no one seems to know how to get it out. ... In an atmosphere like this, Lucian Bute's victory feels like a soothing balm. Of course the sport can't raise the GDP, or buying power and it can't improve people's lives. But it does have one advantage: in difficult times sport success can boost faith in a nation.”
