Christian Democrats must make a move

A coalition with the Christian Democrats of the CD&V party would also be a possibility in Belgium, but the losers of last year's elections are refusing to enter coalition talks without the Flemish nationalists of the N-VA. This makes the Christian Democrats largely to blame for the never-ending political crisis, comments the left-liberal daily De Morgen: "De Wever's success can't just be put down to people sympathising with the snarling 'underdog', but also the fact that his opponents have no message. ... The CD&V rejects the option of a federal government without the N-VA. After hanging on to the N-VA's apron strings for years the party doesn't dare chart out an independent course. Again and again it seems to adjust its strategy to that of the N-VA. And it even refuses to say clearly what it thinks about Di Rupo's paper. To make matters more complicated, no one knows who the boss of the party actually is. ... Divided, engulfed in a hopeless quest for its own message and profile, but indispensable for the decision of whether a government can be formed without the N-VA."
