Estonia needs its National Museum
Estonia has been planning for years to extend its National Museum. The daily Postimees criticises the slow progress on this project: "This is no run-of-the-mill object, and its benefits cannot be measured in everyday terms. We certainly won't be going to visit it every year. But just the knowledge that an institution of this kind exists is invaluable. The Estonians are a small people whose very special history was always a case of to be or not to be. This constant uncertainty and self-doubt are part of our nature. Therefore every step that brings us closer together, that helps us to overcome this doubt and to take ourselves seriously is welcome. In this respect the National Museum is one of the strongest bastions imaginable and therefore something all Estonian citizens should feel passionate about. The scandalous thing about the freedom column was less what it ended up looking like than the fact that it took so long to build. The National Museum should not be consigned to the same fate."
