Election tactics aggravate debt crisis
The Republicans have made their support for a raising of the state debt ceiling contingent on US President Barack Obama's agreeing to austerity measures. Both in the US and in Europe electoral tactics and political divergences are aggravating the debt crisis, the conservative daily Le Figaro criticises: "Without these two ingredients the risk posed by the Greek tragedy would have been averted a long time ago. On both sides of the Atlantic the worsening of the crisis calls for more long-term thinking. Neither the US nor the European Union, with the exception of Germany, can hope for better days unless they adopt stringent budget policies. Everyone agrees on this, yet only a few are adhering to this requirement. We expect those holding political responsibility to say 'Yes, we can'. And then to stick to that."
