Roberto Saviano wants US-style fight against Mafia
US President Barack Obama has signed a decree that imposes sanctions on the Camorra in Italy, the Japanese Yakuza and the Mexican organised crime organisation Los Zetas. The plan foresees the freezing of the assets of members of organised crime groups in the US. A revolutionary measure which Italy should take as an example, writes author Roberto Saviano in the left-liberal daily La Repubblica: "The decision of the US government shakes up the indifference that dominates public opinion in Italy. This indifference even allowed Nicola Cosentino to be appointed as undersecretary of the Italian Ministry of Economy even though he is under investigation for supporting a criminal network, the Camorra, in connection with waste disposal deals in Naples. ... If the Italian government continues to downplay and pacify, or worse still, tries to studiously ignore the alarm signals from the US, it would be furnishing further evidence of its complete weakness and unreliability in the battle against the mafia at an extremely critical moment."
