Quickly use chance for negotiations
Because Serbia and Kosovo do not want to jeopardise their chances of EU membership by engaging in violence there may be a chance for negotiations, but Europe must use this opportunity quickly, the liberal-conservative daily Le Temps believes: "Neither Serbia nor Kosovo have an interest in making the situation worse and thus damaging their image. That would reduce their chances of soon becoming members of the EU, which both countries have declared to be a central goal. After handing over the last war criminals hiding on Serbian territory to the international justice authorities Belgrade has recently made major progress in this direction. Perhaps this new situation was what made Pristina create a balance of power that will convince Brussels to keep up the pressure on Serbia to recognise Kosovo's existence. In order to avoid an escalation the dialogue must be resumed as quickly as possible. And this can only happen under the protection of the Europeans."
