Russia's rule of law beyond remedy
Russia has refused to extradite former KGB officer Mikhail Golovatov to Lithuania now that he has returned home after being freed by Austria. The liberal daily Lietuvos Rytas is incensed: "Has it not been the custom in Russia to mock victims of political violence ever since the days of Ivan the Terrible? Russia calls itself the legal successor to the Soviet Union. So how can President Medvedev simply put the blame for deeds done in those days on the now defunct Soviet Union? The president himself has found no cogent answer to this question. Yet another reason to arrive at the diagnosis: incurable. What should one make of this Russia - itself the victim of terrorist attacks - when it protects terrorists aided and abetted by the president himself? Appealing to the Russian leader is pointless."
