Fateful meeting in Paris

The summit meeting between Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy could decide Europe's fate, writes the left-liberal daily La Repubblica: "The introduction of euro bonds would be a weapon against speculation attacks. It would de facto lead to the weak states being put under provisional administration. ... The bonds reveal the degree of European solidarity because they distribute the national debts of individual states across the whole community. In this phase of the crisis France and Germany are charting out their positions. ... Everyone is aware that the fate of Europe lies in the hands of Germany and France. ... Not a few Germans who dislike the idea of paying for the rest of Europe know only too well that the future of the continent depends on the relations between the two sides of the Rhine."
