Yushchenko betrays Orange Revolution
The former Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko appeared as a witness on Thursday in the trial for abuse of office against the ex-head of government Julia Timoshenko. The liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza finds Yushchenko's conduct reprehensible: "What is certain is that in this trial against the princess of the Orange Revolution, the current President Viktor Yanukovich is taking his cue from his colleague in Minsk, who gets rid of his competitors by sending them to penal camp. Just like Lukashenko, Yanukovych has had the beloved opposition leader prosecuted so that she can't threaten his rule or prevent him from winning the parliamentary elections next year. But that's Yanukovich's game. Yushchenko has no right (above all no moral right) to take part in it. The Orange Revolution owes so much to Timoshenko's charisma, understanding and enthusiasm that it would have never have been victorious in 2004 [and Yushchenko would not have become president] without her."
