Independent Ukraine a success
Ukraine celebrated the 20th anniversary of its independence on Wednesday. Even if the country faces considerable political problems at present, the liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza considers the founding of the new state a success: "Despite several attempts, the Ukrainians have never managed to found a long-lasting state. For that reason alone the country's independence is a success. ... Ukraine has not only its own symbols and army, it also has elites whose future is bound up with that of their country, although they sometimes speak Russian and not Ukrainian. In addition the country is an important neighbour of Poland's, and we have every interest in its success. That holds for the stability of the Eastern border of the EU as well as regarding our shared fate, which does more to bind us than divide us - despite the tragic events in our past."
