Americans more relaxed than Europeans

The way they dealt with Hurricane Irene demonstrates that the Americans are much more rational in their approach to disasters than the excitable Europeans, the conservative daily Lidové noviny writes: "When the biggest city in America is hit by an earthquake and a hurricane in one week, anyone would think Roland Emmerich was sitting in the director's chair. The European catastrophe film guru has taught Americans European-style alarmism based on emotions rather than reason. Is Irene another tile in the mosaic of the Apocalyse we all fear is coming? ... Nevertheless European feelings can't be superimposed on the US. Europe is different from America, where a huge expanse of land runs along the North American Cordillera from the North Pole down to the tropics. New York, which lies on the same latitude as Naples, has Arctic temperatures in winter and tropical storms in the summer. That's an important topic for scientists, but not for Roland Emmerich."
