Belgium must finally form a government
The Francophone socialist and designated Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo on Wednesday presented a new compromise proposal for forming a government after almost 15 months of inconclusive coalition talks. Things will look bad for Belgium if this latest effort fails, the liberal daily Le Soir writes: "The Francophone and Flemish parties that have been sitting at the negotiating table for hundreds upon hundreds of days (one no longer dares say exactly how many) must reach an agreement. They have no choice. ... Or do we really need to instill widespread fear to force a decision by explaining that the world is no longer waiting for us? Must we stress that the stock markets are on the verge of collapse and the banks threaten to topple? Must we remind our politicians that people outside Belgium are evoking a - possibly fatal - crisis of the euro, the risk of recession and the potential failure of the American economic motor? ... Please, the time has come to act!"
