Doubts about Wowereit as chancellor candidate

The SPD party of Berlin's governing mayor Klaus Wowereit came a clear first in municipal elections on Sunday. This is the third consecutive election victory for Wowereit in Berlin. The conservative daily Lidové noviny asks whether he would also be a suitable Social Democratic candidate for the German chancellorship: "Wowereit's charisma has now enchanted Berliners for the third time in a row, but would it suffice for victory at the federal level? It's not out of the question for SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel to name Wowereit as chancellor candidate. The question is if the current state Berlin is in - with enormous debts, high unemployment and growing criminality - would be a good calling card for the federal elections. The Berliners love Wowereit, regardless of all the city's problems. But it remains to be seen whether Wowereit could count on similar support from a sufficient number of Germany's 76 million non-Berliners."
