Cleverer not to file request
The best thing for the Palestinians would be for President Mahmoud Abbas not to file the application for full UN membership, the left-liberal daily Der Standard writes: "Many of those who speak out against Abbas' march through the UN institutions stress that the Palestinians must be given certain prospects, not just for this or that but for statehood. Seen from this perspective Abbas can only win by withdrawing his application to the UN Security Council for full membership for the state of Palestine at five minutes to midnight. Or, if he submits it, then he should let it 'rest' there. Because 'forcing' the US - as the Americans see it - to use their veto constitutes a clear challenge. And if the US is able to bring together the necessary number of votes in the UN Security Council to reject the application ... the diplomatic damage to the Palestinians will be tremendous."
