Surprising praise for Greens
In his speech before the German parliament Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday avoided controversial subjects but praised the Green movement. Because so many Germans are Greens he probably wants to bring them back into his flock, the left-liberal daily Der Standard writes: "The message he directed at the politicians - namely that they should put the general good before their ambitions for power - will have been well received by many. And a good few will be asking whether the Pope will take the advice of the politicians, German President Chrisitan Wulff for example, who brought up the subject of divorcees who remarry. The praise for the environmental movement came as a surprise, even for many Greens. This will no doubt go down well in Germany. But it will take a lot more that his speech in parliament to bring the many lapsed Catholics in his home country Germany back into the fold."
