Socialists' success annoying for Sarkozy

François Hollande will run as the Socialist candidate for the French presidency in 2012. He received 56 percent of the vote in the second round of the primary elections held on Sunday. The primaries have reawakened the socialists' enthusiasm for politics, Lluís Bassets concludes in his blog Del Alfiler al Elefante: "We should pay close attention to what is happening in France. Not only because of the corrosion of the presidential office as a result of the impetuous and egotistic character of its current incumbent, Nicolas Sarkozy, but also because of the calm revolution that is taking place within the ranks of the Socialist Party. ... So far the French socialists have achieved two things. With the primaries and their campaign they have occupied the public arena and the media and mobilised almost three million citizens, much to Sarkozy's despair. But more crucially they have regained their passion for politics, their sense of civic participation and debate as well as the value of ideas, precisely in these times of discontent and crisis."
