Moral victory for Israel
The return of the Israeli Gilad Shalit in exchange for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners is a moral victory for Israel over Hamas, writes the conservative daily Die Welt: "The state that is hated by so many people in the world, also in Europe, has clearly demonstrated how much more it values the life of one of its citizens than its Islamist enemies do. Precisely 1,027 times more. Hamas and other Palestinian extremists send their people to their deaths as suicide bombers, to kill as many Israeli men, women and children as possible. Israel is setting free many condemned terrorists and planners of terrorist acts to save a single soldier. That is the true relationship between morality and immorality, between humanity and baseness in this conflict. Once again the ethical divide faced by Israel is clearly evident. Here we see what an effort it takes for Israel to maintain its own high standards in the face of an opponent like Hamas, who knows no taboos."
