Government in Athens must react to strikes

Greece's two major trade unions have called the biggest nationwide strikes since the beginning of the debt crisis for today, Wednesday, and tomorrow, Thursday, to protest the government's austerity measures. The politicians won't be able to go on governing against the will of the majority of the people in the long term, writes the left-liberal daily To Ethnos: "The government has failed to persuade anyone that a return to the living standards of 1970 and 1960 is necessary to 'rescue' the country, as it claims. And how are millions of workers, youths and pensioners supposed to feel 'rescued' when they are being pushed into unemployment and poverty? The government believes that its parliamentary majority of four votes is enough to allow it to change the lives of our people so dramatically. ... It is confident that if necessary it can crush the protests with the help of the police and the army. ... In theory it is right. But in practice it will be impossible for a government that has turned almost the entire Greek population against it to continue governing."
