Criticism of right-wing theatre directors hysterical
Budapest's mayor István Tarlós has been subject to harsh criticism in recent days both at home and abroad. In early October he appointed the far-right oriented actor György Dörner and former far-right politician and dramaturge István Csurka as artistic directors of the New Threatre in Budapest. The right-wing conservative daily Magyar Hírlap regards the criticism as typical left-wing hysteria: "What is happening at the New Theatre is alarming and horrible. ... And on top of that there is the protest of the German Academy of the Performing Arts. ... I imagine the academy's reaction as the news reaches it that the direction of a Budapest theatre with two hundred seats will be given to Dörner and Csurka. The German Academy cringing like an oyster when lemon juice is poured over it. 'Ugh!' the Academy members squeal, and promptly lash out in feverish protest. Because they've got nothing better to do. They're only concerned about their sick souls, redirected activity and of course the unconditional gratification of their employer [Hungary's left-wing intellectuals]. ... Europe's soul is truly sick. Fatally sick. And Hungary's soul is the sickest of all."
