Ruling party harms Croatia
The Croatian anti-corruption authority is currently investigating the conservative ruling party Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), it emerged last week. Croatia's former prime minister Ivo Sanader is alleged to have used illegal accounts to finance election campaigns. The HDZ has done nothing but caused problems for the country in the past 20 years, the daily Delo writes: "If the HDZ didn't exist the country would be an orderly, stable and respected state - and an EU member - despite the brutal war in the 1990s. In view of the country's natural characteristics the Croatians would be prosperous indeed, and would have even surpassed their Slovenian neighbour in some areas. If the Croatians calculate how much financial and social harm the HDZ has done to their country they will see that the biggest aggressor wasn't on the other side of their eastern border but at home in Croatia the whole time."
