G20 summit just as useless as the rest
The two-day G20 summit begins today, Thursday, in the French city of Cannes. The meeting of the heads of state and government of the world's most powerful nations will be a flop, just like the latest euro summit, writes economist Jacques Attali in the liberal weekly L'Express: "One diplomatic summit meeting follows the next. Whether on the European or global level, they all resemble each other in that there's much ado about nothing and no clear results to speak of. ... Almost 40 politicians will meet in Cannes, plus all those who come without an invitation and meet in the shadows of this caravanserei. The heads of state and government should finally recognise that they will have absolutely no power as long as they make do with such informal meetings. They should stop these futile summits and leave the problem-solving to democratically constituted supranational institutions with adequate means of funding and coercion at their disposal."
